Subject:3 Taoist Immortals Chalkware Figures
Posted By: Mary Wed, Sep 30, 2020 IP: 2600:8801:8803:ef00: I just bought these at an estate auction and have identified them (L to R) as Zhongli Quan, Zhang Guo Lao, and I think He Xiangi. I'm hoping someone can identify the stamp and give me an idea as to their maker and age. The mark is small and hard to photograph, but if unreadable, I'll try again. Thank you so much. . |

Posted By: Bill H Fri, Oct 02, 2020 The markings on your slip-cast figures of Immortals say 'Fujian Huiguan (福建會館), the Fujian Association, a group of accomplished porcelain sculptors working at Jingdezhen in the early Republic period Please see the link below for further of my comments on this subject, plus an illustration that was meant to show why neither that example of porcelain with such marks nor the figures you have shown can be called 'Mark and of the period'. |

Posted By: Mary Sat, Oct 03, 2020 Bill Thank you for your informative response, I appreciate it greatly. When you say "... neither that example of porcelain with such marks nor the figures you have shown can be called 'Mark and of the period." am I correct that you are saying you beleive these are reproductions? Again, thank you. |

Posted By: Bill H Sun, Oct 04, 2020 'Reproduction' isn't particularly apt here, because the figures aren't fakes of anything that would qualify for a copyright lawsuit, and faux marks of all kinds have been a fact of life for centuries in China because, in my opinion, most people who can read the marks find them likable and take them for granted, and people who can't read them presumably bought the marked pieces because they enjoyed them for their decorative art's sake. |
