Posted By: Rodolphe Fri, Sep 25, 2020 IP: 109.88.105.91

Hello,

I acquired this cup duo recently.
I would like to learn more about her.
Could you help me in finding the signature and if possible give me a manufacturing period.

Thank you, kind regards

Your Qianjiang-palette pedestal bowl has a stamped on apocryphal base-mark of "Made for the Hall for the Cultivation of Virtue' (Shen de Tang Zhi - 愼德堂製). Its inscription indicates the piece was painted in the summer of 1885, the cyclical 'Yiyou' (乙酉) year, or 11th year of the Guangxu Reign (1875-1908). The inscription is signed by the painter Zhang Ziying (張子英) and sealed with his red mark of 'Ziying' (子英). Zhang Ziying's name also appears on a list I found of Qinjiang painters active at Jingdezhen as of the 14th year of Guangxu, or 1888.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Dear I. Nagy, If you keep reminding me enough, I'm going to remember the difference between 乙 and 己 one of these days. On another point, Shendetang was a Hall at the Summer Palace, which had been built by the Kangxi emperor (1662-1722) and was ransacked and burned in 1860 by Western troops during the 2nd Opium War.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Bottom mark,
慎徳堂製 - Shendetang Made
Shendetang was the name of imperial kiln during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Colophon (visible) part of inscriptions,
己酉夏 - In Summer of the Year of Earth-Rooster (1909)
張子英作 - Made by Zhang Ziying
Marking,
子英 - Ziying

Zhang Ziying was a court painter in the late Qing Dynasty and worked at the imperial kiln too.

I think your cup is an imitation.
On the net you can find a lot of pictures on originals from him.

With regards,
I.Nagy
