Posted By: Bill H Sat, Sep 26, 2020 Your Qianjiang-palette pedestal bowl has a stamped on apocryphal base-mark of "Made for the Hall for the Cultivation of Virtue' (Shen de Tang Zhi - 愼德堂製). Its inscription indicates the piece was painted in the summer of 1885, the cyclical 'Yiyou' (乙酉) year, or 11th year of the Guangxu Reign (1875-1908). The inscription is signed by the painter Zhang Ziying (張子英) and sealed with his red mark of 'Ziying' (子英). Zhang Ziying's name also appears on a list I found of Qinjiang painters active at Jingdezhen as of the 14th year of Guangxu, or 1888. |

Posted By: Bill H Sun, Sep 27, 2020 Dear I. Nagy, If you keep reminding me enough, I'm going to remember the difference between 乙 and 己 one of these days. On another point, Shendetang was a Hall at the Summer Palace, which had been built by the Kangxi emperor (1662-1722) and was ransacked and burned in 1860 by Western troops during the 2nd Opium War. |
