Subject:Japanese Actor Print Translation Help
Posted By: Stan Sun, Sep 20, 2020 IP: 2601:18c:504:a6e0:d0

I recently purchased 7 Japanese actor prints by Kunisada because I liked the price and the condition. The one below has good green color (fades to blue when exposed to light for any length of time) for a print nearly 200 years old.

I think I have it pretty well figured out. The actors are Seki Sanjuro II and Yamashina Jinkichi (dog). It is from a play performed in the 9th lunar month of 1826. Of the 5 roles in the "Kaesu Gaesu Onagori no Ôtsue", I think Seki Sanjuro is playing the footman.

Can anyone confirm my research from the text in the print? Many thanks for your help.

Cheers,
Stan

Dear I. Nagy,

Thank you for your time and help. I appreciate it.

Fortunately, there is a fair amount of information to be gleaned online about this print. I have others wherein I was unable to find any information and will be looking for help from the forum.

Cheers,
Stan

Some additional info. This actor print was designed by Utagawa Kunisada (1789-1865) and published by Matsumura Tatsuemon in 1826, 9th lunar month. The kabuki actors are Seki Sanjûrô II (1786-1839) as the blind masseur (zatô) and Yamashina Jinkichi IV (dates unknown) as the dog (ime) in the 5-role hengemono entitled "Kaesu gaesu Onagori no Ôtsue", performed in Edo (Tokyo), Nakamura theatre.

Guy.

Guy,

Thanks for that information. I was working from Kabuki21, but didn't get it all quite right.

Cheers,
Stan
