Subject:Help With Translation - 18th or Early 19th Century Japanese Print (Book Leaf) - Lady with a Fan Riding a "Horse"
Posted By: Clifford Nunn Sun, Sep 20, 2020 IP: 74.98.232.237

Hi All,

Fresh from the Goodwill today - a beat-up leaf from a Japanese book (probably 18th or early 19th Century) - either rice paper or some sort of fine cloth, and either a woodblock or partly hand-done. I'm hoping someone can translate the inscription above the scene, which is of a female rider (Lady Ise?) on a "horse" that appears to actually be two men in a horse costume. The overall style is similar to pieces by Shunsho Katsukawa (1726 - 1792), though most of his prints seem to have a double-line border, so perhaps not by him. Any help would be appreciated!

Best,
Cliff

Transliteration into modern kana -script,
and its English translation.

津ふり光 - Tsufuri Hikari (Publisher's name)

母の乳 父のすねこそ恋しけれ
ひとりでくらふ事のならねば

Haha no chichi, chichi no sune koishikere,
hitori de kurafu koto naraneba

I still miss my mother's milk
and my father's shin because I can't eat alone

With regards,
I.Nagy

The link goes to the information above, and a pictures showing this very image as the left page of an open book. I am posting an image in case people are reluctant to use a link. I do not know if my page is from the same edition of this work. Thank you!

Best,
Cliff Nunn
