Subject:Help With Translation - Chinese Poem on Late 18th Century Japanese Porcelain Dish
Posted By: Clifford Nunn Mon, Sep 07, 2020 IP: 74.98.231.232

Hi All,

I've been unable to make any progress on translating the characters on this porcelain dish, but I understand from reading an article by Irene Finch that in the second half of the 18th Century, there was a fashion for Chinese or Chinese-style poetry on certain porcelain items in Japan. I'm not certain this is a poem, but am hoping that someone who can read this can provide a rough translation, and perhaps will even know the poem if it is a famous one. Thanks - much appreciated!

Best,
Cliff

Probably the description of the picture on the other side, arranged in form of a five-character-quatrain.

千尺瀑布也 - Thousand feet waterfalls
雲間看白櫻 - White cherries are seen between the clouds,
風光無限處 - Boundless scenery
騒客乗吟行 - The bard walks and chants

With regards,
I.Nagy

Mr. Nagy,

Thank you so much! This poem seems to reflect the scene in relief molding on the front, as there are blossoms and a waterfall - I'll see if I can track down this poem. Best, Cliff
