Subject:White Guanyin figure , unknown age

Posted By: Bill H Mon, Sep 07, 2020 The image is slip-cast, so can't be older than that process, the use of which dates to the early 20th century in China. It's my experience that the older, more valuable Dehua-made Guanyin images usually have elaborate hand-carved and detailed pedestals, draping of the robes, and hair arrangements having a small plaque showing host Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara at the front of the coif. The simpler slip-casting here looks to me to be another mass-produced image of the goddess from Mainland China or Taiwan, which have been major sources in recent years. |
