Subject:Brass hand
Posted By: Nini Mon, Sep 07, 2020 IP: 77.249.195.156

Hi,

I found this brass hand on a flea market. I wonder what the purpose is for this item. The seller thought it was for burning incense, but wasn't quite sure. There is a small hole in the finger.
The size of the hand is comparable with the size of a man's hand.
I'm also curious about the origin of this item. Does anyone know? All info is much appreciated.

It looks like a Buddhist Mudra (symbolic hand gesture) but as far as the purpose of the piece, I couldn't tell you. Incense burner may be possible.

You have a Buddha hand with fingers in the 'Karana Mudra' or pose of warding off evil. Seems to be modified with a cavity for burning joss or incense. The writing may be Chinese but isn't distinct enough to make out.

Best regards,

Bill H.
