Subject:Moonflask - possibly early 20thC Satsuma
Posted By: Alex Thu, Sep 03, 2020 IP: 2a02:587:351b:3300:d

Could someone please let me know what the mark on this moonflask reads? I'm pretty certain it's in the Satsuma style and suspect it's from early-20thC. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I can't read the third stack of characters on the left, which could be the artist, but the first two lines read as Kutani, Imperial Japan, which latter line usually indicates Meiji period (1868-1912) I believe.

For comparison, here are some images of what I take to be a probable Meiji-era Kyoto-style 12-inch moon vase in Satsuma-style crackle-glaze pottery, albeit unmarked. The lack of a mark at least tells me it has a likelihood of being pre-1891, when American customs law mandated English language country of origin markings on exports to the USA. This rationale may apply to your vase as well, even though it has a character mark.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I tried to figure out the Kanji on the left.
Perhaps the top one is 村 (Mura), but I wasn't able to decipher the bottom one.

Perhaps I.Nagy has an idea????

Regards,
Martin.

I read it,
大日本 - Dai-Nihon (Middle)
九谷村造 - Kutani mura-zō (Left and right)
(Kutani Village Made)

With regards,
I.Nagy

Martin,

I should read it as 九谷 大日本 村喜 - Kutani Dainippon- Muraki.
