Dear Mladen,
Kano Chikanobu, early 18th century. Leading painter of the time.
The Spot is Miho no Matsubara.
Such a good painting deserves a better photograph!

Just as supplement to Peter's posting,
Signature,
周信筆 - Chikanobu-hitsu - Painted by Chikanobu
Seal,
如川之章 - Nyosen no shō - Seal of Nyosen
- Nyosen was one of his pseudonyms -

With regards,
I.Nagy

The 'Nyosen no shō' seal (如川之章) on the painting is not consistent with the original seal, property of the artist.

As often, this painting must be a later copy, probably 19th or early 20th century.

Guy.

Dear Guy,

Many thanks for this important info.
The fact that the painting may be a later time copy doesn't make it less beautiful for me anyway.
Would be better to be an original but.... :-)

Best regards, Mladen

Dear Guy,
A reference can only be a painting, not only a sea, especially not a book. Your reference book is not accurate, it also gives no source for the information. Offen it only contains reproductions of other books, even woodblocks. I attached a photo of the 如川之章 seal, and a second of the 如川章 seal, both are not only showing the inaccuracy of your printed reference but also that the characters are in the originals much better and in style consistent. The 章 in your print is in fact only readable as 章 because it couldnt be anything else. Your reference is reproducing older woodblock prints.
As for the painting of Mladen. If its only for the painting I would be willing to accept it, as the quality is very high. Especially the ink wash! Unfortunately such landscapes are not giving a very individual brushwork.
There are however slight issues with the signature and the seal. Latter is consistent in style and might just be another more linear version. Its not really conclusive for me in any direction.
The painting is an old painting (the material) is at least 18th century mounted new in the second half of the 20th century. The reused fine old ivory ends and the good condition show the appreciation of a good collector.
A copy of Chikanobu in the late 19th and early 20th century is not a thing I really could expect.
Peter

Dear Peter,

Thanks for your interesting insights. Can you indicate the source of the first seal? Problem for me was to find and to show an acceptable picture in high resolution of the 如川之章 seal, present on an authenticated painting, to make my point.

Guy.

Dear Peter,

Thank you very much for your help!
You are absolutely right about the poor quality phone snaps. The irony is that I am a professional photographer. :-)
Here attached is a better quality photo of the painting.

Thank you again.
Mladen
