Subject:Chinese Vases - Unusual Impressed Mark
Posted By: Peter Mon, Aug 24, 2020 IP: 77.119.128.227

Hello ,
On my recent travels I came across this pair of crackle-glazed Chinese vases, each about 23 cm in height.
To my (relatively inexperienced) eye they appear to be possibly transfer printed and therefore relatively modern. However, I was quite puzzled by the unusual impressed mark on the base of each vase.
Has anyone else seen other Chinese wares marked in such a way ?

Many thanks for any help on this subject.

Peter

The impressed mark says 'Guan' (官); meaning 'Official', which is found on some famous crackle-glaze wares made during the Song Dynasty (960-1269). I'm sorry to inform that this would be around seven centuries or more before your indeed transfer-decorated Chinese vases were made. I didn't find any pattern matches, but there are plenty of similarly marked crackle glaze vases for sale on eBay under euphemistic claims of "old". I've pasted some links below that show examples.

Best regards

Bill H.
