Subject:Netsuke inscription antique or newer?
Posted By: Jon A. Thu, Aug 20, 2020 IP: 2607:fb90:a69b:f89d:

Is there anyway to tell a tourist piece apart from an original traditional one? I am guessing the tourist piece ones are less valuable then the original traditional ones made to be kept within? Hope that makes sense and thanks again for the previous info.and help. I am guessing this is another tourist piece from the earlier 1900s? It is lighter in color then the last one I posted. Any idea of the signature also ? Thanks again

Hi,

Going to comment here about the three that you just posted. I'd say these are actually later, maybe 1950s and quite possibly Chinese made.

Concerning value, yes, they are worth less than the genuine antique pieces. More problematic, if you were considering selling them, you might find it difficult as they are ivory and perhaps not quite old enough to be considered legal (1947 is the big cut off date).

Regards,

Hi thank you both for responding BUT I am a bit confused because when I look at the artist that I. Nagy says the signatures are then they point to the Artists being much older and Meji Period netsuke carvers. Are these then not authentic and newer or from the period of the artist who signed them? Hope my ? makes sense and thanks for any clarity.
