Posted By: fm_tea_cup Sun, Aug 16, 2020 IP: 2600:8804:8080:96f:d

Greetings, I'm hoping to get help from experts regarding identification of a heavy, etched / hammered dipper, bowl measures 7 3/4". Marked 'KOREA' on the bottom. Thank you in advance!

The 'dipper' looks to be in the form of a charcoal iron, apparently new or recently polished to remove any patina from age and serving these days as a flower pot. Here are some images of a Chinese 19th century charcoal iron that saw long service in Burma before I bought it there in the 1980s. It originally would have had a wooden handle to protect the ironer's hands from the heat. The projection where the handle would be inserted has a taotie design, probably a tiger mask. In my opinion, it probably was made north of Burma's border in Yunnan Province.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you so much for the insight, my father in law who served in Korea, mentioned as well that it could be a charcoal vessel of some sorts. He'll be delighted to hear that expert's opinion confirmed the same. You're spot on on its being used as a planter - I definitely found specs of dirt in it. Thank you again!
