Subject:Signed Oil Painting found at Swap Meet
Posted By: Richard Wed, Jul 29, 2020 IP: 70.166.85.248

Hello!
I found this lovely oil painting at a swap meet and couldn't get the money out of my pocket fast enough when the seller told me he wanted only $5 for it. I was wondering if anyone could help identify the country and/or artist. The third photo is a closeup of the signature. The painting itself measures roughly 12" X 15" and seems to be very well framed.

I am grateful for any help.
Thank you,
Richard

Hi,

Definitely a nice painting. It looks south-east Asian to me so around Thailand/Vietname, just basing myself on the style but someone who knows the scripts better would be able to help.

I'd say it's mid-twentieth century.

Not much, but I hope this helps.

Thank you John T. I thought the same. I was trying to identify the script as well. As I remember, Vietnam uses a Latin script. I am ignorant about Laotian, Cambodian, Thai and Burmese script. I tried google translate to see if it recognized the script but couldn't get it to work. I even removed the background and uploaded that to google translate but with no luck.

Hi Richard,

This must be Thai and/or traditional Laotian script. The alphabet is similar. Look at the second letter and the third from last.

Condition with the craquelure, is evidence of its age. I would date it as late 19th century. The presence of the parasol and the bamboo chicken coop places it in the region of Thailand/Laos.

Let me know when you find someone to translate the text.

Regards,

Miano

Miano, Thank you! I have yet to find someone to translate and/or identify the artist. I will certainly update here if I do.

It’s Thai, but Thai script usually needs to be very clear for me to make it out. All I can read for sure here is the first word of the second line: ล้านนา (Lanna) which refers to Northern Thailand. So it's a depiction of rural life in Northern Thailand.
