Subject:Chinese? Jade? Archaic? Fish?
Posted By: Sally Wed, Jul 29, 2020 IP: 90.240.205.5 Hi , for a long time I thought this was Maori and meant to be a seal, as in the sea animal, but now see a resemblance to chinese archaic jade objects. It's about 2" long Any thoughts as to place and date of manufacture would be much appreciated. Thanks |

Posted By: Ernest Wilhelm Wed, Jul 29, 2020 Looking at the first photo,I see a Jade seal, finely carved, and I believe that your first assumption is right. . Maori. I hope that Master Adams can give his opinion. This is his field. |

Posted By: Sally Thu, Jul 30, 2020 Thank you Ernest , it's good to know you concur with my first thoughts on this piece. Even though I've had it a while and really like it I only recently noticed that it's carved on both sides so not sure my powers of observation are the greatest! |

Posted By: Sally Tue, Aug 04, 2020 Thank you Mark , I guess it'll have to remain a mystery object for now. I've even thought it might be Canadian because it's a seal. Perhaps it's very broadly Pacific. It seems to owe something to native or ancient cultures though most likely pretty modern as you say. Thanks again Mark and Ernest for your help. |
