Subject:Curious about Chinese or Japanese label under statue
Posted By: John T. Tue, Jul 28, 2020 IP: 90.49.34.134

Hi,

I have this Chinese statue in my collection. I'm quite curious about the labels underneath and what they refer to.

Even the date I struggle to read, I can't quite tell if it's "1986" or "1886"?

As far as I know, it's Chinese.

Any/all help would be much appreciated,

Regards,

1,
中国桂林 - China Guilin
1986 S61.2.4
S61 is the 61st Year of Shōwa era (Japanese) which corresponds 1986 - February 4

2,
1986 昭和61年2月5日
中国桂林
1986 61th Year of Shōwa era (1986) February 5
China Guilin

It is certainly Chinese, but dated Japanese.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thanks for your replies.

The Chinese sculpture written in Japanese would make sense as I originally purchased it from a Japanese collector. My guess would be that he was the one who wrote the date, presumably when he either purchased it or when it was made.

Thanks for your help,

Regards.

Dear John,
The Japanese collector could have bought them on two
consecutive days in the Chinese city Guilin.
Cheers,
I.Nagy
