Subject:Seto Styled, Signature with Stylized Sei? Seriously Stuck
Posted By: J. Robert Tue, Jul 28, 2020 IP: 2601:c6:ce7f:c750:c0

Greetings all,
Pardon the alliteration, was hoping to spice up the listing titles here.

In what I'm sure will be a thankful yet "duh" reveal, I was wondering about this signature I've been working on for too many hours amongst everything else..

It's located on the leftmost side of the base, inside the foot-rim.
The vase is bottle-like in its form, and proportionally similar to the example I included from Kato Tomotaro in the days of the Yugyokuen kiln.

The bottom character, I believe to just be a stylized "Sei" - which really doesn't help in solving this for most; and the application mostly seems to be nabeshima-like with the underglaze blue for most of the body, and the overglaze(picture of sample included) patches of rust/brown in small parts.

I've received many different answers, ranging from Seizan to Seifu to Miyagawa - and everything in-between.

I don't think it's a Seizan styled piece given the inkblown nature of the landscape - but Miyagawa (especially Hanzan) marked pieces, while known for their Seto style application, don't usually have signatures far placed on one side; and are usually distinctly recognizable.

Closest I've gotten to would be something like an uncommon condensed Nishiura signature but don't believe this to be the case either.

Thanks in advance for any help..
Normally I enjoy "the puzzle" when I can, but if there's one thing I've learned: Japanese signatures can be written many many ways, and sometimes one truly does get "seriously stuck"

Thanks again - it's a gorgeous piece.

Regards,
J. Robert
