Subject:Japanese tea set
Posted By: Chris Fri, Jul 03, 2020 IP: 2600:1004:b126:fd30:

Hello, I'm looking for help in identifying the marks on this tea set. It has 5 cups with lids and a side handle pot. I'd like to know what the characters on the bottom are, and their meanings. Age of set, artist and/or any other information is appreciated. Thank you.

The mark reads: Kutani 九谷 - Towa 陶和.
According Gotheborg Kutani ware from the late Taisho period or the early Showa (1920-1940 pre WW2).
No information known about this Towa artist or studio.
Regards,
Martin.

I dug a little deeper and found a Japanese site:
http://www.touwasha.co.jp/about/index.html

Where one can read (translated):
In 1967 (Showa 42) the Terai-Kutani Cooperative Association was established with five friends and in 1970 (Showa 45) the cooperative was disbanded and they resumed business under the name of Kutani Towa-sha.

Towa-sha used marks like yours, so it seems that the date by Gotheborg was too early.

If you Google to "Yahoo Auctions" and search there with "陶和 九谷" you find a number of items with the same mark as yours.
Regards,
Martin.
