Such a Chinese box would have been for brushes in traditional use. These days it works just as well for pens and pencils.

The motif features stylized longevity characters, arabesques and a Chinese 'lightning & thunder' fret as borders, with large leafy swirls added as filler. This motif appears from its repetitive elements to have been applied by the transfer method, which technology came into use on a regular commercial basis in China during the early 20th century. Your particular box probably was made in the late part of that century by one of the many porcelain ornamentation factories that opened on the China Mainland and elsewhere in Asia, including the former colonial enclaves of Hong Kong and Macao.

Best regards,

Bill H.
