Subject:Chinese Vase - Translation and Age, please
Posted By: Peter Wed, Jun 24, 2020 IP: 91.141.3.138

Hello,

I recently came across this Chinese vase, which I initially thought, at first glance, could be a Republic piece.
However, I have my doubts and suspect that it may be much more recent.

Any comments will be very much appreciated !!

I can't help with the highly cursive inscription on the side of the vase, but the base-mark appears possibly to be 'Old Moon Pavilion' (Gu Yue Xuan - 古月軒). This mark originally was associated with a handful of exquisite 18th century Chinese imperial porcelains but has since been widely reproduced.

If my eyes aren’t deceiving me, the surface texture, reflective qualities and smooth flat cut of the foot all make your vase look like milk glass instead of porcelain in these pictures. If this might be the case, then the piece has a great deal in common with this four-inch tall Chinese milk glass snuff pot I bought several years ago and tend to believe is no older than the mid-20th century. It isn’t signed, but the palette, and painting style are close enough to have come from the same shop or studio, in my opinion. As such I’d speculate that your vase might date to circa the late Republic Period (1912-49) or subsequently.

Best regards,

Bill H.
