Subject:Balinese painter - Dewa Ketut Ding
Posted By: Stew Wed, Jun 30, 2010 IP: 218.250.181.112

I bought this painting and frame from a shop owned by the painter's family in Bali about 15 years ago.

The artist was already in his 80's or 90's back then. Does anyone have any information on this artist and his other works. I tried to google him but found only a few references. The paintings shown on this one (www.leohaks.com/2010/balinese_modernists/other/balinesemodernists_other.htm) seem to have a different style to the painting I attach below.

Does anyone know anything about this artist and whether my painting is his style?

Back in the 80' I bought a painting from the artist. Left were just two. As far as I remember yours was the second. Signature is the same as mine. Your painting is in the traditional style while mine was influenced by Bonnet. The shop was situated in Hannoman street and as far as I know is still there selling musical instruments althought his son or grand son is painting as well. As for Ding he was in his old age, very thin and very reluctant to sell me that painting.
When I turn back to Bali his relatives do recognize me and ask me to sell them back the painting.

After multiple internet searches and forum inquiries, you are the first person who knows of him. None of the SEA galleries in Hong Kong know him. I do remember at least one, maybe two other paintings like this one. He was alive when I bought it and I remember the negotiation with his grandson (?) who said this could be one of his last paintings. (hence, he could not reduce the price much). Had I had the money, I would have bought another.

I have checked online museums and found little on the artist. I sent mine to be kept at my sister's in the US.

Anyway, if you have a photo of yours, I wouldn't mind taking a look at it. Are there any websites with his other work?

Hi,
My painting is on the web : title two beauties (flickr). Christie's sold one painting for a fair amount some time ago. Some other painting can be surely found on the website of Agung rai gallery. Tell me if you saw mine while buying yours to know if I passed first to his place or not. Thanks

Do you have a picture of the signature?

I purchased a painting from Mr. Ding in 1992 from his shop in Ubud. I was a poor student, and spent a few days scrutinizing the paintings for sale around the area. I especially liked his place and this one painting of Garuda and Cita. It had special meaning to me. I recall his grandson and granddaughter in the store. I talked with him about painting and Bali. He talked about how he was tight with Mr Spies (he put his two thumbs together and said "spies, like that" implying that they were close). It was really cool.

a few years ago I was back in Ubud, and I searched out the place. The family is still there, and I shared my story. They were quite kind and showed me some stuff they have not for sale. Also, they showed me how much some of Ketut's paintings are selling for in galleries.

I don't care how much it may be worth, I don't think I would ever sell my painting.

Cheers,
S
