Subject:Help identify two mid-18th-century publishers from Osaka
Posted By: Yura Sun, Jun 07, 2020 IP: 176.106.204.132

Dear forum members!
Please help identify two mid-18th century publishers from Osaka. Pay special attention to their seals. I think that their personal names are written there. I found out that one of the publishers (hanmoto 版元) (left) was Hishikawa (菱川).
Thanks in advance

Title,
京祇園八景 - Kei Gion Hakkei - Eight Views of Gion in Kyōto
Artist cartouche,
大和繪師 - Yamato eshi - Japanese painter
梅雪堂 - Baisetsudō

Baisetsudō Sadamichi 梅雪堂貞道
Mid 18 c. Ukiyo-e artist in Kyoto

I read the script under the Hanmoto, - Maybe I'm wrong -
守書 - Mamorigaki - Amulet writing
鹿川 - Kagawa
Seals,
豊 - Toyo
ロ俊 - ロshun

As of the picture on the stone torii gate a plaque reads "Kanshin-in" identifying the shrine in the Gion district (later renamed as Yasaka Shirine)

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you Mr Nagy for reading the title 京祇園八景.
I wonder if the pronunciation should rather be 'Miyako Gion hakkei?' ( Eight views of the Gion district in the Capital = Kyôto)?

The name of the first publisher could eventually be 守玉 (Shugyoku), seal 豊 (Toyo).

Date: 1740s

Guy.

Dear Guy,
Kei sounds too literally so let's make a compromise in
Kyō-Gion - all the more the famous Japanese restaurant in the same district "京祇園彦八" reads
Kyō-Gion Hikohachi.
Shugyoku could be OK.
I don't know if it's in Andreas Marks' Compendium ? I don't have it.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear Imre,

Thanks for your response. I'll show the print to a ukiyo-e scholar in Japan and let you know his further insights.

The publisher is not in Marks' Compendium.

Guy.

Dear Imre Nagy!

Thank you very much for all your invaluable and selfless help to all those who desperately need translations from the Japanese language to better understand the value of the cultural treasures of the "Сountry of the Morning Sun", which are in their possession.

Signed in the left hand corner 'Yamato-eshi Baisetsudô) (大和絵師 梅雪堂- Baisetsudô, Japanese painter) and sealed 貞道 (Sadamichi).
The artist is Baisetsudô Sadamichi (梅雪堂貞道), a painter, ukiyo-e artist and illustrator active in Kyoto in the mid 18th century.

This extremely rare and important print is partially hand-colored (beni-e).

The reading of the title and identification of the publisher(s) need more research.

Guy.

My acquaintance in Japan reads the title indeed as 'Kyô-Gion hakkei'.

The first publisher name is 寺玉 (Teradama) with seal 豊(Toyo or Yutaka). This reading is based on Genshoku Ukiyoe Daihyakka Jiten, vol 3, 1982 (yôshiki, horizuri, hanmoto).
The second publisher name is 荒川 (Arakawa), seal not read.

Baisetsudô Sadamichi designed an other series 京大仏八景 (Kyô-Daibutsu hakkei - Eight views of large Buddhas in the Capital) that was issued by the same duo of publishers.

Dear Guy Pepermans!

I appereciate your help very much! I am sincerely impressed with your relevant additions on this issue. You brought me very close to finding out the "white spots" of this hand-painted woodcut. And although reading the second publisher's own name on the seal is problematic. I hope that in time I will be able to overcome this obstacle.

Sincerelly Yura
