Subject:Help needed with names / signatures on Kutani ware
Posted By: Martin Michels Sat, Jun 06, 2020 IP: 2001:1c03:5808:3800:

Recently I bought a number of Kutani porcelain pieces, 2 of which can be seen here, a small sake cup (5 cm diameter), plus a cup and saucer. Of both I am puzzled as to the names in the signature on the left side of the marks.

The marks on the cup and saucer are the most strange. On the saucer the marks says: Kutani XX zan (or yama) with the 2 parts of the Kanji next to each other. But on the cup the 2 parts are above and below each other.

The mark on the sake cup also starts with Kutani, but I can’t figure out the Kanji and name on the left.

Has someone any idea what the Kanji and names are?
Any help will be very welcome.
Thanks in advance.
Martin.

Pic. 2-3,
九谷誠山 - Kutani Seizan
On Pic. 3 in case of character 誠, the elements are compressed in a compact shape.
Pic.6,
九谷庄三 - Kutani Shōzō

You will find them on the net.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear Martin,

It is hard I have just found for Kutani : Meizan or Seizan for the first one and Yuzan for the second one;
for Seizan if you google you could find some wares with similarities with your nice dish,
If it can help to search more but I could be wrong,
Best regards,
Antigone

Dear I.Nagy and Antigone,
Thank you very much for your help, despite all my study of the Japanese signatures, I keep coming up with surprises and I learn something new every day.
Much obliged, regards,
Martin.

Dear Martin,

When I see the knowledge of Nagy and yours, I think mine is very small and I can make a lot of mistakes, and I think we can learn all the time in this life this is what is interesting,

Sincerely,

Antigone
