Subject:Chainese Tiger Scroll Translation Help
Posted By: Stan Sun, Jan 19, 2020 IP: 2601:18c:504:a6e0:99

I am thinking of buying a Chinese scroll. Since this not an area where I have any expertise, I am seeking assistance. What does the text say? Does the text below provide any clue to date and artist?

The scroll is 13.5 feet long (a whole lot of tigers). Comments on the quality or other opinions of the work also sought.

Any help appreciated,
Stan

A copy of imitation.
Please see eBay site under the following title.

Title: 百虎圖 - Picture of Hundred Tigers
Colophon; 癸酉仲春江南居士識 - Signed by Jiangnan-jushi (Jiangnan Resident) in Mid-Spring of the Year of Water-Rooster (1993)

Jiangnan-jushi (Pseudonym), according to several Chinese web sites is a modern painter who used to paint several versions of this "Picture of Hundred Tigers". In the inscription he says that the original of the picture was painted by Zhang Ze*
張澤 of Sichuan, whose pseudonym was Hu Kung 虎公
(Master Tiger)lived in Suzhou and kept tigers in his garden to sketch them etc.

* Zhang Ze 張澤 1882-1940 was an apprentice of Zhang Daqian, but his real pseudonym was Huchi 虎癡 (Tiger Crazy). He painted some l0 versions of this picture, which could be considered as real originals.

With regards,
I.Nagy
