Subject:Miniature eggshell porcelain vase, inscription
Posted By: Sally Thu, May 07, 2020 IP: 90.255.53.87

Hi, this is a tiny vase, approx. 3"/8cm high. As far as I know it's Jingdezhen , second half of the 20th century. I would be grateful if anyone can translate the inscription or has a more accurate idea as to the date of making. Thank you

Per the base-mark, you're correct about it being 'Made at Jingdezhen'. The middle and left stack of characters appear to read down and across from the right as 'Made during the spring of the Jiwei year (1979) at Zhushan (aka Jingdezhen)'.

Best regards,

Bill H.

花香 - Fragrance of flowers
巳未年秋月 - In the Autumn Month of the Year of Earth-Sheep (1919)
於珠山 - In Zhushan*
Bottom mark,
景徳鎮 - Jingdezhen

(*Zushan district pf Jingdezhen, Jiangxi)

Thanks , I figured 1979 was more likely , it's amazing to have such an accurate date for it.

I believe 1919 is a bit early for the 'Jingdezhen Zhi' mark, which is indicated in Tony Allen's book, 'Allen's Authentication of Later Chinese Porcelain (1796 AD-1999 AD)' to have first been used in the second quarter of the 20th century. Gotheborg.com shows the red mark, albeit contained within square borders, as from the second half of the 20th century and the same mark in blue as circa 1970. Here's an image of a similar red mark without borders that was in use in the 1980s, according to a Chinese website.

Best regards,

Bill H.
