Subject:Satsuma Vase
Posted By: Shea Robinson Sat, Apr 25, 2020 IP: 173.73.101.165

Hello all,
I have this beautiful pair of vases and I'm finding similar markings online, one almost identical. But the translations are different. Can someone please assist with the translation of the mark? I can recognize parts of the mark, like the crest in Gosu blue. Any additional help is appreciated.

The mark reads: Dai 大 Nippon 日本 Satsuma 薩摩 Yaki 焼 Seiko 晴郊 (Great Japan Satsuma ware Seiko).
Seiko might be the potter or painter, but I could not find any information about him (or her?).
Unfortunately I'm not able to read the red seal.
Date: Meiji Period (1868-1912).
Regards,
Martin.

I found another Seiko mark with in the red seal the name Toko 東光 Do 堂 (Tokodo).
The first 2 characters of this name look a lot like yours, so I believe the name in your red seal is Toko 東光.
These seals were called Kakihan and are usually the seal of the painter.
Regards,
Martin.

Hello Martin, here's a link to a pdf document with the catalog of a 2014 sale by the UK Bonham's Auction House of another vase signed by Fuso Seiko and having a red seal of Tokodo. The vase is pictured, and you only need to use your browser's "find" feature to activate the search window of the pdf to locate the listing. The seal isn't shown but the characters for Fuso Seiko's name are, so no reason to believe the seal isn't identical too.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi Bill,
Thank you for the additional confirmation. I found that same PDF in my initial research; but when I sent it to someone for an evaluation they gave me a completely different translation of the mark: Satsuma yaki- Kagayama ga Kagayama. I couldn't find anything online that matched that translation. And I couldn't find a reference when I did a search here; so I posted the question because you guys are always helpful and steer me in the right direction. Thank you so much for your help!

Bill,
Thanks for this addition.
I do have a mark of Seiko with Kinran Toki, see picture.
But unfortunately I can't decipher the name in the red seal Kakihan, but perhaps you or I.Nagy :-) have an idea.
Regards,
Martin.
