Subject:Chinese hanging scroll with Rohdea japonica
Posted By: Michele Sat, Apr 25, 2020 IP: 116.88.181.184

I would like to know if anybody has seen a scroll like this, representing a large pot of Rohdea japonica decorated with peonies. I have got it from Japan and I can see that it bears numerous Qianlong seals that I suppose are fake.

Thank you!
Michele

仇英實父製 - Painted by Qiu Ying Shifu
Upper seal,
仇英之印 - Seal of Qiu Ying
Lower seal,
十州 - Shizhou - Pseudonym

Qin Ying 仇英 1494-1552
Shifu 實父 was his courtesy name
famous Ming Dynasty painter from Suzhou

The rest are Qing Dynasty imperial collection related seals.

Your picture is a reproduction.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Yes, the Qianlong seals are fake, as are the seals and signature of the purported artist, Ming painter Qiu Ying, whose only picture with a floral focus in the imperial collection was this one: https://theme.npm.edu.tw/exh103/qiuying/ch/photo05.html.

Still, the imagery itself seems quite well done, so I wonder if it has been reproduced from a genuine Qing (most likely) picture. Reverse image search only points to this scroll on Japanese online auction sites, so there's no easy answer down that route.

Thank you for the information Nagy and rat!

This indeed comes from Japanese auction site and I think it is a rather nice and well done picture and I am interested in the subject. It does not look like a recent reproduction to me but I could be wrong.

dear michelle,
dont be hasty with this. its a very fine painting.
based on your photos it is not serious to call the signature and the seals fakes. your painting is even matching the painting technique of the link given by rat, and i consider this much more important.
however, it dosnt look too good in your photographs. i would need much better resolution to say more. It would be also interesting to learn more about the mounting, the material.

Hi Peter,

Thank you for your comment, I have actually just purchased this scroll and it has not arrived here yet. I have used the photographs provided by the seller. I will upload more photographs, including the mounting as soon as I get it.

Michele
