Subject:Japanese (?) Vase
Posted By: Peter Mon, Mar 23, 2020 IP: 178.165.128.191

Hello,

I'd be grateful if anyone can give any information about this (presumed) Japanese vase, such as it's age, and possible origin. A translation of the seal on the base would also be much appreciated.

Many thanks to all !

Peter

Your cylindrical vase is Chinese. Crackle-glaze wares with applied faux bronze applications and apocryphal base-marks of the Ming Chenghua reign (1465-87) were produced circa the late 19th-early 20 century (Qing Guangxu-Republic periods). I've seen the applied dragon motif on a cylindrical vase before but don't recall the gilt finish, which isn't particularly remarkable, as my collecting interests center on polychrome painted porcelains.

FYI, Japanese depictions of dragons usually are the three-clawed kinds, whereas the Chinese style tended to have four and five claws.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hello Bill,

Many thanks for your reply. Especially interesting to learn how to differentiate between Japanese and Chinese dragons.

Much obliged!

Peter
