Melon jars and paintings in this style and palette are datable to circa the 1930s. This one has the Daoist Longevity God in front of an iconic evergreen pine, holding his symbolic peach in one hand and staff with double-gourd full of long life elixir in the other. The boy between the god and a figure that may be his doting mother is hefting what looks like a Buddha-hand citron, a symbol of abundance, probably including fecundity in male heirs in this case. The deer is the Longevity God's conveyance.

The inscription includes a cyclical date of summer in the Renshen (壬申) year (1932), which seems appropriate here. The piece is signed as done in Jiangxi Province by Zhang Shengshun (張生順). I'm fairly certain about the surname, but since I couldn't find a record of the artist, it may be that I'm wrong about one character or the other in the given name.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Many thanks Mr. Bill,
really seemed 19th century style to me, in this case, bescause you mentioned Renshen, 1872, but I'm still learning:)

Thanks again for your time,
best wishes!
