Subject:Blue ground lotus bowl,cover, stand&spoon , Guangxu stamped mark
Posted By: Sally Sat, Mar 07, 2020 IP: 90.252.120.140

Hi , this is one of 4 bowls, covers and stands and 2 spoons. Stamped mark to the base. The decoration is hand painted , all slightly different, scrolling , lotus (?) flowers, bats and shou (?)symbol. The marks are all a bit blurred , Guangxu ?. I'm guessing they re not period but may be republic? I ve seen similar catalogued as Straits Chinese , Malaya? Thoughts and opinions welcome , thanks.

Your assumption of Republic period looks to be correct, circa 1930s, based on the worn-out stamp used for the mark of "Made during the Qianlong Reign of the Great Qing Dynasty" (Da qing Qianlong nian zhi - 大清乾隆年製). I'm also guessing the rims left the factory without any gilt applied, which is another good clue to Republic origins for stamped-on marks, as cited by Anthony J. Allen, a.k.a. "Tony", in his most recent book, "Allen's Antique Chinese Porcelain -- The detection of Fakes".

Here are some images of a related white-on-blue Indian Lotus pattern I found on a covered bowl and stand set consisting of "married" components. The lid has a four-character Guangxu period reign mark, while the base of the bowl has "Made in the Imperial Kiln" (Guanyao nei zao). This pattern was exported to Overseas Chinese population centers in Southeast Asia, including Straits Chinese (Nonya) communities and Vietnam.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks Bill , very informative , as ever, and thanks for sharing. I also have a ginger jar in a version of this pattern , stamped China, 20th century but hard to say exactly when.

The stamped "CHINA" mark was used from 1891 to 1920, when "MADE IN CHINA" was required. Early versions of both marks were permanently kiln-fired onto the wares, but I've seen some apparently later 20th century "CHINA" marks that were stamped on in removable red ink. Acetone will dissolve such marks if you want to test this one.

Another thing found occasionally is an etched version of the "CHINA" mark, which usually means the piece bearing it was considered to be a true antique made before 1890. Here's an example on a Guangxu Mark & Period famille jaune floral and "Wufu" (five bats for blessings) dish. The pattern is imperial and was produced with slight color variations as early as the Qianlong reign.

Best regards,

Bill H.

What a beautiful bowl , and mark. I've never seen the etched China mark before. I 'm pretty sure the mark on my jar is under the glaze which would make it late 19th early 20th . It 's useful to know you can use acetone to test .
Thanks

The mark reads Da Qing Qian Long nian zhi.
