Subject:15 Foot Scroll
Posted By: Becky Douglas Mon, Feb 24, 2020 IP: 75.191.128.60

I recently acquired an Asian scroll, approximately
15 feet horizontally. I have taken a picture of the first of the scroll and the second picture is of the first 5 feet. Can anyone tell me anything about this scroll. If more pictures are needed please let me know.

Thank you.
Becky Douglas

Title,
清明上河圖 - Along the River During the Qinming Festival
翰林學士趙孟頫 by Member of the Hanlin Imperial Academy Zhao Mengfu

The original was painted by the Song painter Zhang Zeduan (1085-1145). During the subsequent dynasties several copies and versions were made. You have a museum repro of an early copy made by Zhao Mengfu 1254-1322 during the Yuan Dynasty, which is generally considered to be very faithful to the original.

Thank you for your response. Do you have any idea of the age of my copy? There seems to be quite a number of stamps well into the roll on the actual picture. Also can you identify the artist who made the copy?

Thank you for your response. Do you have any idea the age of this scroll and the artist who copied? On my copy there are a number of stamps on the painting itself.

Thank you.

Dear Becky,
I think your scroll is a late 20th c. reproduction of the copy made during the Yuan Dynasty.
It has been reproduced by photomechanical means in a printing company. This process, as the name implies involves generating an image photographically, but printing with ink on paper rather than photosensitive material.

The red seals are so called collectors' seals affixed to the copied (Yuan Dynasty) scroll.
For example the big one in the middle of the title reads;
乾隆御覧之寶 - Treasure Seen by Emperor Qianlong

With regards,
I.Nagy
