Subject:Identify if unmarked Hatstand is Japanese or Chinese
Posted By: Cassie Wed, Feb 26, 2020 IP: 73.163.28.205

Hello Forum,
Can anyone help me identify if this unmarked hat stand is Chinese or Japanese and if so what period was it made? Thank you in advance, your help is much appreciated!

Chinese in my opinion. Hats usually were sweaty things before air conditioning was invented, so genuine hat stands typically had large perforations in their sides to permit circulation of drying air. As such, I'd call your item a cylindrical vase, though such a container could have been used to store things like joss sticks for a censer on the home altar, or as a censer itself, with sand inside for stability and to hold the burning joss sticks upright. This particular piece is modern, circa 1960s or later and meant to brighten up the home. It looks probably to be transfer decorated and has what may be factory mark on the base, albeit unreadable.

Best regards,

Bill H.
