Subject:japanese Fukagawa bowl?
Posted By: Giuseppe Sat, Feb 29, 2020 IP: 85.225.86.154

I would like help to understand if this bowl is a Fukagawa. I could not find examples of fukagawa ceramics stylistically similar to this, however, the brand behind it seems to be that of Fukagawa. I don't know if the writing behind it is Japanese and if it is the name of the craftsman.
Thanks again

Thanks Mark. Any idea on the writing and the period?

Looks like a Kyoto dish with a variant Fukagawa 'Mount Fuji and stream' mark, which is more likely an exporters' mark rather than a makers' mark. The white, crackled feldspathic glaze, the iron brown-dressed rim, and the stoneware (not porcelain) clay body fit best with a Kyoto attribution. It could have been made in the late Meiji period but more likely well into the 20th century.

Thank you Robert
Is the writing below the bowl that of the craftsman?

Can it be in Kenzan style?

It might be Kenzan style, the mark reads indeed Kenzan: 乾山.
The stamped mountain with stream mark is an indication that it's made mid 20th century.
See this Gotheorg link:

and scroll to the "Nichi Hon (Nippon)" paragraph.
Regards,
Martin.
