Subject:Chinese B/W Prunus Vase
Posted By: Ken Sat, Feb 22, 2020 IP: 45.46.204.177

Hello, I am interested in any information regarding this blue and white Prunus vase. I acquired it as a lamp in need of a cord with painted pot metal base in need of solder. I am happy with it just as a vase with a hole. I started to think this may be older than 1920 not sure how much older? Would this have been part of a garniture set? If so, would this have been made for the western market? The glaze stops at a very defined edge which I believed was an indication of quality, the blue glaze line that circumnavigates the base fades in and out which to my untrained eye seems sloppy. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts if for no other reason than it is pretty. Any insight anyone can provide is greatly appreciated. Cordially, Ken

Hi Ken,
Your pictures are a bit blurry. However based on the base I think your vase dates to the Guangxu period 1875-1908.
Drilled vases were popular during the 1930's due to the issue of the lack of lamps etc.

Hello Mark,
Thank you for sharing your insight. It made a poor lamp and looks just fine on the shelf.
Appreciatively,
Ken
