In my opinion this is Japanese Satsuma ware.
Although I'm familiar with marks having the Japanese flags like this on Kutani ware (Watano marked), this doesn't look like a Watano signature.
Since this signature here is very vague, I only recognize 2 characters: 土田, so this might be the signature of Hododa (or Hotoda) 保土田, although I never seen a Hododa plate like this by Hododa.
Regards,
Martin.

Forgot to mention the date: late 19th century, regardless of whether it is from Hododa or not.

John,

It looks like a japanese satsuma bowl and your mark seems to be similar than the ones made for the japanese army during WW2,
I have a sake cup with similar flags (for one) told WW2 Military Sake Cup Sakazuki Star Flag Navy Army Soldier; perhaps the writing on my cup was similar than the one on the below of your bowl?
It seems that your bowl was made for a WW2 soldier?
Sincerely.
Antigone

With all due respect to Antigone, but I don't think that John's bowl is a military bowl from WW2.
Unfortunately we miss the dimensions (height and diameter).
In the meantime I found out what is written on top between the flags: Dai 大 Nippon 日本 (Great Japan), which is another indication that it's from the late Meiji Period (late 19th C.).

For those interested, there is a website about military cups, see this link:

Martin.

Thank you Martin to share your knowledge, very interesting link,
Yes not for a military bowl from WW2 you're right,
Very good found for the translation,
What is the meaning of these flags? Just "made in japan" or wares for the japanese army?
What to you think if it was made for an upper grade of the japanese army during late 19th?

Sincerely,
Antigone

Inscription on the military cup,
歩兵四七 軍曹 - Infantry 47th Regiment - Sergeant
大神 - Ǒkami/Ǒmikami - The Sun Goddess - (Amaterasu Ǒmikami)

With regards,
I.Nagy

Antigone,
I have no idea about the meaning of these flags and whether ceramic items marked with these flags were intended for the Japanese army. As mentioned before the Watano studio used this kind of marks sometimes, see my pictures below.
Perhaps someone else could tell us more about the use of these flags?
Regards,
Martin.

Thanks for all your replies. I am aware that the bowl was bought in Hong Kong in the 1920's by some one who was either in the foreign office or military so that would preclude a WW2 date. I will measure the bowl accurately and let you know.

It was left to my late mother from an elderly neighbour around 1970. It used to be hung on the wall with a wire metal frame which luckily hasn't damaged it! Thanks

As I mentioned before, I haven't got a clue about who the maker is, the signature with the name is too vague.
Martin.
