Subject:Large Asian Vase
Posted By: Marilyn L Sat, Feb 08, 2020 IP: 2601:285:8380:7bc0:7

I love this large Vase and would like to know more about it. I'm a little mystified by the "creatures" on the upper part as I can't tell what they are supposed to be. It measures 18.75" tall and the bottom markings are underglaze. Thank you!

Looks like a modern 20th/21st Century Chinese vase with a Kangxi mark. Not sure about the animals.

Your baluster vase is identifiable from characteristics of its form and motif as a Chinese piece that likely was decorated at a porcelain ornamentation workshop in Hong Kong circa the late 20th-early 21st century. The creatures at the shoulder are dragons, while those just under the mouth-rim are kneeling lions (a.k.a. 'foo dogs') On the base in a double circle is a faux mark of 'Made during the Kangxi Reign of the Great Qing Dynasty', which emperor was in power much earlier, from 1662-1722.

The link below shows a photo taken in the early 21st century in the Hong Kong 'Overjoy' Porcelain Ornamentation Factory in Hong Kong. Vases there show similar border treatments of 'linghi' fungus-shaped scepter heads, and at least a couple of them look to have similar applied mythical creatures above the shoulders, though hard to see, as the photos aren't well lit.

Best regards,

Bill H

Thank you Mike and Bill. It was interesting to
learn about the Overjoy porcelain makers. I learn so much from you all!
