Pardon the intrusion but thought I'd add some stuff.

The character, 杏 (Xing), as seen on the snuff bottle, can indeed be a type of plum or even an almond, though on the calendar it traditionally represents the 'Apricot Month 杏月 (Xing Yue), which would be the lunar second month or around February on western calendars.

The flowering plum or prunus, 梅(Mei), lends its name to the tenth lunar month (Mei Yue) in the fall. Ironically, its character also can mean apricot.

There's a place in Shandong province called 'Apricot Altar' (杏壇 -Xingtan), site of the school of Confucius. Can't believe Confucius left behind so much room for confusion.
