Subject:Japanese lacquer box and symbolism on a screen
Posted By: Tom Aspden Fri, Jan 24, 2020 IP: 146.200.64.193

Hi, I wondered if somebody was able to work out what the character in the square on the left was, as I understand the two vertical characters to be Setō, as stated below the mark, and the mark meaning 'made'.

I also wondered whether anybody knew the significance of the flaming object in the 3rd picture, since I have seen it in multiple Japanese pieces, and don't know what it is meant to represent. Note that this is on a separate object to the lacquer box.

Thanks very much for your time and insights,

Tom

佐藤 製造 - Satō seizō - Made by Satō

The flaming object object is basically the tantric flaming wheel of law (chakra). The wheel with eight petal like spokes (only four of them are painted on the right side) and flaming protuberances. The Buddhism adopted the wheel as a main emblem of Buddhas teaching.

I.Nagy

Thank you I. Nagy, very interesting! I don't want to seem rude, but have you made progress with the other prints (after pictur 5) that I posted previously?

Very much appreciated,
Tom

That's a shame, but thank you for trying anyway!
