Subject:Help identifying Chinese & Japanese china
Posted By: Fanny Kellerman Sat, Jan 11, 2020 IP: 83.251.244.86

I have been tasked with handling a small collection of Chinese and Japanese plates and decorative items. Any help in identification would be hugely appreciated. In return I can offer dibs for anyone who is interested in expanding their own collection. :)

These are just a few of the items to see if anyone is willing to lend me their expertise.

Hi Fanny,
I'm prefacing all my responses with "I'm pretty new to this, but"...

Your vase looks like 19th century Nanking blue and white porcelain with crackle glaze. The mark to the base is also similar to marks I've seen on 19th c Nanking pieces.

Since I've only been learning about Chinese porcelain for a year or two, I will leave it to the experts to comment on authenticity.

Thanks,
Shea

Crackle-glaze wares of this baluster form, with the dark brown faux bronze flourishes and an apocryphal base-mark of Made during the (Ming) Chenghua Reign" were popular during the Qing Guangxu period (1875-1908) and later. Most I've seen tended to be in famille verte tones or famille rose, as seen in the pictures below. However, blue & white motifs are known as well. From what can be seen here, your vase seems to be a Guangxu-period piece, striving to resemble the Kangxi style, in my opinion.

Shea, you're well along in appreciating this stuff, but I thought I'd also pass along a photo of a Nanking platter from the early 18th century FYI.

Best regards,

Bill H.
