Subject:Edo period Japanese scroll
Posted By: Elora Thu, Jan 09, 2020 IP: 2a01:cb05:8362:5000:

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me identify this scroll.

I believe it represents the goddess Kishimojin. A friend told me she thought it dated back to the Edo period.

Unfortunately some of the characters seem to have faded away with time. I'm not sure just how possible it would be to read the text as a result.

Any help and opinions would be welcome.

Thank you,

Dear Elora,
Definitely it represents Kishimojin (鬼子母神)a.k.a.
Hariti a revered goddess and demon in Buddhist traditions for the protection of children, complicated deliveries and general family harmony.

The inscription is too faded out to decipher, but from the lower enlarged part I could figure out the followings;

Right side,
...正中山法華經寺安重 - Enclosed in the Shōchuzan Hokekyō-ji* (Temple)
(* Temple of the Nichiren-shu, founded during the Kamakura period, where Kishimojin is venerated)
Middle,
開眼法 - Kaigen-hō(yō)- *Eye Opening Ceremony
(* Buddhist service to consecrate e.g. a temple, statue, painting etc.)
中山相傳 (Shō)Chuzan Hereditary
通妙院 - Tsumyōin
(Name of a hall inside the precincts)
日蓮 - Nichiren

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you for your insight and translation.

I might see if I can get a better photo of some of the upper text. Sadly, I can tell that some of the characters have been erased, presumably by exposure to the sun and the passage of time.
