Subject:Woodcarving - pair of owls?
Posted By: Larry Fri, Dec 27, 2019 IP: 104.142.126.185

Hello, This is one of my favourite pieces, I always assumed it was Japanese, ..has anyone any information on carvings such as these?

The piece measures 10" high.

I have a single owl of similar design from Indonesia.

Thank you!

I just investigated Indonesian owl carvings and indeed this is definitely Indonesian work.

I'm still intrigued by the design of the rockwork that the owls are mounted upon ..the design almost looks like it's based on a Chinese model ...any thoughts?

The wood used is very hard, fine grained and heavy - any ideas as to what kind of wood? It is definitely not Teak or any other open-grained hardwood like Ironwood

best wishes

Larry

I really don’t know any more than you do. Asian styles are interconnected the same way Western styles are so similarities exist. And when trade expanded in the 1600s between East and West, European Baroque borrowed from Chinese and exchanged European influence to the East. Ultimately, artisans and merchants just try to sell products that appeal to whomever is buying.
