Posted By: Paul Kowalski Wed, Dec 25, 2019 IP: 222.153.154.126

Hi Everyone Merry Xmas! Hey is anyone able to a) identify the artist of these two wall plaques and b) when they were made? Are they republican period pieces or not? Any help, as always, is greatly appreciated 🙂

1st picture is too far to read.
2-3, picture,
驅牛過河去
回首飛暮鴉
Driving cattle through the river
Looking back on flying crows in twilight

Unfortunately, the seal is too smudged to decipher. However, I have seen it before.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Sorry I was forgetting about the colophon,
巳未年仲冬畫
Painted in the Mid-Summer of the Year of Earth-Sheep (1919)

Ok so that makes them Republican period, now it’s just a matter of identifying the artist... thanks for your help 😀

P.S: An afterthought occurs that the character "驅" (qu) "to drive on" might be a more suitable one to start off the inscription translation, even though Wang Qi's real paintings usually contained more inspiration for "song" (謳). However, the radicals for the two characters are quite similar when written cursively or accursedly.

I also forgot to include that good quality works in the Wang Qi style also sometimes have value a bit above purely decorative porcelains, but you should wait for other evaluations.

Are you able to post a picture of the back opened?
Otherwise it is very difficult to determine the age.

Hi, I have thought about opening the backs up they are so tightly framed with a wood back and lots of little nails I’m afraid I’d break the frames and possibly the plaques themselves, but thanks for the suggestion. Cheers

Fair enough if you do not want to remove it from the frame.
As Nagi has pointed out this theme is/was very popular during the early 20th Century.
I do not believe this is the work of the famous artist Wang Qi. The style/quality of the work is inferior to the master. Also not his typical hand in calligraphy. Yours is far too rigid. I have in recent months seen some very high quality fakes by this master.
With the amount of high quality reproductions coming out of china today it is very difficult to determine the said age of yours purely by looking at a couple of small pictures.
The glaze and pigment colours used are consistent with republican period porcelain plaques.
