This actually is a Japanese ceramic quince, I believe, with a base-mark of "Monopoly Sales Concession No. 288315 issued to Tamura Kyuhei" (專賣特許 二八八三一五 田材久平). Tamura Kyuhei was a potter who opened a kiln in the Awaji area in 1883, according to the 1901 book, "Japan - Its History Arts and Literature" by Captain Frank Brinkley. The monopoly concession was similar to a patent and is found on some other Japanese ceramics made in the 1880s and sold by entrepreneur Takeuchi Chubei.

Another quince by this potter turned up in the forum in 2011 (link).

Best regards,

Bill H.

Actually, Japanese ivory carvers are very fond of fruit. This ivory carving signed "Mitsuhara (光玉) appears to be an apple and I described it as such in comments posted to someone else's thread about a couple of years ago. Now I wonder if it might be a red quince, though the leaves and stem still look more like an apple. Maybe others have thoughts?

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hello Bill,

Happy Newyear.

I think it's a persimmon (in Dutch "Kaki"),
see picture.
Regards,
Martin.
