Subject:Chinese small bottle marks 4
Posted By: Vicky Tue, Dec 17, 2019 IP: 2a02:c7d:da5e:300:a9

Can anyone tell me anything about this bottle and the base mark please? Any other information would also be greatly appreciated.

you don't show a base-mark but the iconography on your snuff bottle includes the "good luck" character "ji" (吉) beneath what resembles an auspicious stone chime that's supported by two lucky carp (among other things regarding carp, fishing is to Buddhists the only respectable occupation that takes the life of a living creature).

On the one side shown clearly (in the first photo) is a stylized character "Shou" (壽) for "long Life".

The other side apparently shows a child (traditionally considered very lucky if male) holding a lucky carp while standing over a blooming lotus, the latter flower a Buddhist symbol of reincarnation.

And the color red of the snuff bottle is itself very auspicious, being associated with marriage and the bride.

Best regards,

Bill H.

You don't say what the material of the snuff bottle is (glass?). This is fairly recent (20th century or later) and fairly crudely executed with what appears to be modern rotary tools. Compare with the execution of the fish in our jadeite snuff bottle below.

Cheers,
Stan
