Subject:Cloisonne Collector

This is my first time posting on this forum. I enjoy collecting cloisonne, mostly Japanese, but some Chinese pieces as well. I inherited a number of high quality pieces and have been adding to this collection when I find a piece that intrigues me.

All of the Japanese pieces are from the Meiji era and the Chinese pieces I have fall into two basic categories: 1) late 19th early 20th century; and some that are likely from the early 19th century and older.

While I am interested to find information about some of the cloisonne pieces I have, I will refrain from asking specific questions until I have photos to post.

I have noticed that there are some people aggressively buying the more exceptional cloisonne pieces on Ebay, some at extraordinary prices. Not a bad thing, but I was wondering if anyone has noticed an uptick in interest among the better pieces of Cloisonne or Asian art in general?

Dear Harold,
Cloisonne enamel of the meiji period has to be really exceptional for it to be of high value, and of course in perfect condition. Of note are artists such as Namikawa Yasuyuki,Namikawa Sosuke, and some of the more intricate Hayashi pieces to name but a few makers.I have attached pictures of two Namikawa Yasuyuki vases in my collection, these are in the higher value category, but as I said, it very much depends on the maker and the quality of the item.Cloisonne comes in all forms, from crude to exceptional, so please do look around on the internet, and you can make a good comparison.And yes, the value of the high quality pieces DO have a high value, and are very much sought after.
