Subject:Antique vessel
Posted By: Dan Mon, Dec 02, 2019 IP: 2a02:c7f:1e3d:de00:4

Hello,
I was hoping that someone could help me identify the period (and possible value) of this vessel? Or just identify the markings?
Many thanks

Your bronze vase or joss stick holder looks to be Chinese, based on character style, and probably was made circa the late Republic to early People's Republic (circa 1945-1955). It possibly had ornamental handles at the sides, since the side shown seems to have had the screw or brad holes poorly soldered over; otherwise, fairly good casting. Mark reads '晴風齋' (Qing Feng Zhai) - 'Studio of Clear Weather'.

Your photos lend a dearth of info on size, which could affect value, but I'd guess value to be low in any event, on the order of US$25 more or less.

Just an afterthought: I think there may be a trace of Japanese style in the bird & pine motif, which in the presence of Chinese in the mark might be a hint that the piece came from Taiwan, which had been a Japanese colony for half a century before liberated at the end of World War II.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi,
I think Bill is only partially correct as I am sure this is Japanese, the shape the design not Chinese ever.Do not forget that earlier Chinese and Japanese characters were the same.Date late 19thc early 20th but worth quite a bit more than $25.00
