Subject:Famille noire ginger jar. Chinese or Japanese?
Posted By: Giuseppe Fri, Nov 29, 2019 IP: 85.225.86.154

Hello
I saw this beautiful Ginger Jar several times on the internet. It is sometimes referred to as Chinese other times as Japanese.
The mark looks Japanese to me but I would like to have your help. In some ads I have seen that it also has the CHINA stamp.
Thanks
Giuseppe

That jar would be Japanese, and the mark has previously been ID'd by Martin Michels as "Oshima Sei (made by Oshima) - 大島 製". See link.

Best Regards,

Bill H.

Thanks Bill
Any idea about age?
Can it be from the beginning of 20th century?

Looks like I nodded off before posting the link below. Martin also made a call of late Meiji, ca 1900.

Best regards,

I have 2 of these, my mine only marked "OSHIMA" not "OSHIMA SEI). I think mine is from a later date. Can someone tell me how old mine is?

"Made in Japan" means that these vases are at least from 1921. Stamped marks like this are often seen on export ware from the 1930's.

Martin.

I have one that is identical to the image shown. Does anyone know what the value is?
