Subject:Please help identify
Posted By: Ralph Thu, Nov 21, 2019 IP: 76.88.104.200

Could you please help me identify this kakejiku artists signature and stamp.

When I received this from my father, the edge panels were very damaged.

I did not know at that time that the side panels could be restored. So to preserve it, I had it put into an acid free matt, and framed.

Any information about the artist, subject matter, quality, signature and stamp would be appreciated.

Signature and seal read, 陽堂 - Yōdō

Tanaka Yōdō 田中陽堂
I found one picture from him on Yahoo and Aucfree auction sites without any biographical data.
(Same signature, different seal). Presumably contemporary artist.

With regards,

Thank you for the reply, but  I could not access that particular web page you referenced.

I attempted to research the name you suggested, but came up with a much more contemporary modern artist, not someone who would have lived in the right time period to have created this antique silk scroll.

Someone else recently tried to translate what it said, and they referenced the name
"Re Yodo".
(Not sure of the correct spelling.)

Does that help identify the artist?

Thank you again for your reply,

-Ralph

Artist name : Miyata Yodo, (seal also says Yodo and the signature is Yodo) (when reading it the o is extended) 1930

Miyata Yodo was born on the 33rd year of Meiji (1900) was trained under Ikegami Shuhou, who did research in the Northern and Southern style paintings and was a student of Araki Kanpo. Miyata Yodo lived in Tokyo Komagome Sendagi district for artist's entire life. The works are considered to be representative of early Showa period Japanese art (1926-1940).
