The calligraphy in black ink reads down as "丁卯夏月周以鴻畫於昨非軒 - Ding mao xia yue Zhou Yi-hong hua yu Zuo-fei Xuan - Painted by Zhou Yihong in the summer of the dingmao year at the Pavilion of Life's Past Failures". The intaglio white-on-red stamp immediately following the inscription reads "Yihong". while the one beneath it reads Zhou Shi (周氏), "Zhou Family". The larger white-on-red seal at the lower right is the studio name, "Zuo Fei Xuan".

According to information found on the Chinese internet, Zhou Yihong was born in 1921 and grew up in a family of artists, which upbringing had him reading the classics at an early age and showing his calligraphic and painting skills by his teen years. I found no indication of whether Zhou might have passed away by now or was a candidate for the century mark. The only dingmao cyclical year to come around since he reached adulthood would have been 1987. I found a Chinese auction catalog with an indication that the highly popular Chinese artist Zhang Daqian (Chang Dai-chien) once wrote Zhou Yihong's name to be used on a cover of an exhibition catalog for the latter's paintings. So Zhou certainly seems to have earned great respect among other luminaries during years past. The link included here shows auction information for another of his paintings with a different studio seal.

Best regards,

Bill H.
