Subject:Pair of Japanese Dishes with Poem? Inscriptions
Posted By: Cliff N. Sat, Nov 02, 2019 IP: 74.98.231.232

Hi,

I am told by the person who traded me these dishes for some coin silver spoons that the dishes are each painted with characters that comprise a poem - I was hoping someone would be familiar with these theme and perhaps with the specific inscription. I have pictured the foot of one of the dishes, which may or may not be a clue to the period of their manufacture. Thanks! Best, Cliff

Your dishes are Chinese with the inscription of Su Shi's* "Fu* on the Red Cliff*" (赤壁賦 - 蘇軾)

* Su Shi - Chinese poet 1037-1101

* Fu - an intricate literary form combining elements of poetry and prose, much cultivated from Han times to the Six Dynasties period

* Red Cliff (赤壁 - Chibi - Battle of Red Cliff of 208 at Chibi, a decisive defeat of Cao Cao at the hands of southern kingdom of Wu

I.Nagy

Hi although I admire I Nagy's answers he is incorrect in calling these Chinese. The base is a typical late Japanese base not Chinese so my guess is that these are fairly modern copies of a Chinese design

Hello,

Thank you so much! Is this a common form in Chinese pottery (poetry on small dishes)? And would these be modern, then?

Best,
Cliff

Dear Cliff,

Please find my rough translation of the poem on your dishes,

赤城賦
是歳十月之望
歩自雪堂
将歸於臨皋
Fu (Ode) on the Read Cliff
On a night of full moon in October
We were walking back from Xuetang to Lingao
二客從予
過黄泥之坂
霜露既降
木葉盡脱
人影在地
The two guests were following me
Passing the Yellow Mud Slope
The road was already covered with frost and dew,
The leaves of trees all were fallen down
We could see our shadows on the earth
仰見明月
顧而樂之
行歌相答
We stopped and looked up to the bright moon
Looking back on each other and responded with
lines cited from poems

This is the first strophe of the "Fu" on your dishes.
The picture in the middle depicts Su Shi and his friends travelling on a small boat on the Yangtze river to visit the Red Cliffs, just outside of Huangzhou.

With regards,
I.Nagy
